One Resource for Supporting ECDC Refugees in the DMV area

This page makes it easy for you to precisely target your contribution to where help is most needed. Choose from providing bunk beds for refugee children, emergency overnight stays for Ukrainian families, textbooks for refugees’ first English class, or a sewing machine for an Afghan mother looking to start a side business to support her family.

Emergency Fund for Refugee Families in DC, VA, and MD

This fund is used only in emergency situations to help unaccompanied minors, single mothers, and refugee families from Afghanistan, Ukrainian, and Central America to get through the night. The fund is administered by ECDC’s Virginia office to pay for overnight lodging, groceries, clothes, blankets, medicine, and baby supplies. All donations are tax deductible and 100% goes directly to help those in need.

Free ESL Classes for New Refugees

Support the Ethiopian Community Development Council’s efforts to help new refugees improve their English as they build new lives in America. Our12-week ESL classes are free and in high demand among hundreds of Afghan and Ukrainian refugees in the DC Metro area in need of practical English courses on how to communicate with their children’s school teachers, make doctor’s appointments, succeed in job interviews, and more. Our volunteer teachers provide online courses at all levels – beginner up to advanced — throughout the day to accommodate refugee work schedules, childcare needs, and transportation barriers.

Emergency Fund for Ukrainian Refugee Families in Virginia

This fund is used only in emergency situations to help unaccompanied minors, single mothers, and refugee families from Ukraine to get through the night. The fund is administered by case managers in ECDC’s Virginia office who work directly with refugees to pay for overnight lodging, groceries, medicine, and baby supplies. All donations are tax deductible and 100% goes directly to help those in need.

Refugee Women's Empowerment Program

The Refugee Women’s Empowerment Program assists refugee women in northern Virginia to support their families and launch small businesses utilizing their talents in culinary arts, fashion design, tailoring, and computer skills from their home countries. The group was created by an Afghan refugee to benefit other refugee women from every country struggling to build productive lives in their new country while combatting feelings of isolation and dislocation. The Women’s Empowerment Group provides sewing machines, fabric, needles, as well as cooking supplies and ingredients to expand opportunities for these at-home mothers to generate a second income to support their families. The group also provides customized workshops and job training based on the unique needs of the female members as they take the next steps toward self-sufficiency.

Back to School Drive

ECDC is devoted to helping the hundreds of children from Afghanistan, Ukraine, and elsewhere with essential technology to succeed in school and secure a brighter future.  Our case managers who work closely with hundreds of families have noticed that many refugee children do not have access to laptop computers, and we are asking your help to fill this need.
