ECDC Calls for Urgent Action to Prevent Further Migrant Deaths at Sea
Arlington, Va. (August 6, 2025) – The Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) mourns the tragic loss of at least 68 migrants and expresses deep concern for the 74 others reported missing after a boat carrying approximately 154 individuals, believed to be Ethiopian nationals, capsized off Yemen’s southern coast. This devastating incident, confirmed by the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM), highlights the extreme dangers faced by migrants forced to undertake perilous smuggling routes.
The tragedy underscores how overcrowded, unseaworthy vessels combined with harsh weather conditions and ruthless smuggling operations continue to claim innocent lives. Migrants fleeing the Horn of Africa due to political instability, economic hardship, and climate-related crises remain particularly vulnerable to exploitation, trafficking, and deadly journeys.
ECDC calls upon governments, humanitarian organizations, and the international community to take immediate action by strengthening search and rescue operations in high-risk transit areas, expanding access to safe and legal migration pathways to eliminate dependence on smugglers; and addressing the root causes of displacement through sustained humanitarian and economic support.
“The time for action is now,” said Tsehaye Teferra, PhD, ECDC’s President and CEO. “Each life lost at sea represents a preventable tragedy. We must work collectively to protect vulnerable migrants and uphold their fundamental rights to safety and dignity.”
