Each year, we gather to commemorate this important day, dedicated to honoring the courage, resilience, and strength of refugees from around the world. While World Refugee Day serves as a solemn reminder of the challenges faced by displaced individuals and families, our event transforms it into a joyous opportunity to honor the incredible journeys and vibrant contributions made by the refugee families and clients we serve.
Our World Refugee Day celebration is designed to bring the community together, fostering understanding and appreciation for the cultures and backgrounds of our diverse communities and newcomer refugees. It provides an opportunity for everyone to engage in meaningful interactions, fostering connections and understanding through curated activities and cultural performances.
For families, there are activities for children, food from around the world, and opportunities to connect with others in the community. It’s a day to celebrate, learn, and share in the spirit of unity and solidarity.
So, mark your calendar and join us in commemorating World Refugee Day with a day of festivities, cultural exchange, and community building. Together, we can create a world where every refugee’s journey is met with support, understanding, and celebration.
Refugees' First Thanksgiving
Refugees’ First Thanksgiving is an annual ACC-DC Metro tradition that brings newcomers and the community together in the spirit of sharing a traditional American potluck meal. This cherished event serves as an introduction to refugees, offering them their first glimpse into the quintessential American holiday and the Thanksgiving spirit, all while fostering community bonds through networking opportunities, cultural music and dance performances, engaging children’s games, and a diverse array of food that includes both traditional American feasts and international dishes.
Central to our mission is our steadfast commitment to assisting newcomers who have fled violence and persecution, empowering them as they embark on the journey to rebuild their lives in the United States. This rebuilding requires more than just service provision; we believe safety and sustainability cannot exist without community. Events like Refugees’ First Thanksgiving dinner are designed with this in mind, aiming to nurture this sense of community and ensure that every newcomer has access to a robust support network.
In 2022, Refugees’ First Thanksgiving welcomed over 500 attendees over the course of the 4-hour event, involved 200+ volunteers and was highlighted by numerous news outlets and journalists.
