This year’s theme — “The right to seek safety was made for you and me” — is a reminder that safety isn’t divisible. None of us is fully safe until all of us are.
This week, as we count down to June 20, World Refugee Day, we’re sharing a few stories from people we’ve had the privilege of walking alongside. Each one shows a different piece of what safety really means in practice — not just arrival, but the chance to work, to belong, to rebuild, and to dream forward.
A Journey of Strength and Hope
Yessica Martinez, a single mother of three from Costa Rica, came to the United States seeking a safer and brighter future for herself and family. Although adjusting to a new life came with challenges, especially finding affordable childcare and balancing work with caring for her children Yessica Martinez remained determined to build a stable life.
Recognizing these challenges, our Team members at ECDC at our Silver Spring office worked closely with Yessica and helped secure a daycare scholarship for her youngest child, easing financial stress and allowing her to focus on supporting her family. With continued guidance and encouragement, she secured a position as a Beauty Advisor in fashion and beaty industry.
Today, Yessica is thriving in her role and enjoys meaningful work while still having quality time with her children. Her journey reflects strength, resilience, and a deep commitment to creating a safe and happy future for her family.
